Headaches

Headaches overview

Headache conditions are one of the most common conditions people complain of and can be migrainous, tension, cervicogenic or cluster in origin.

Recent research shows that, when there is neck pain involved, there is an area at the bottom of your brain which is overly sensitised in people who have headache/migraine. This area is like a nerve centre, where the information from your neck, scalp, sinuses, face and forehead converge before being sent to your brain for processing.

How we can help

In people with headache and migraine, normal information passing through this area is interpreted by your brain as abnormal which causes painful symptoms.

This area of the brain also signals in response to changes in the chemical serotonin, and your fight or flight response.  This explains why tension headaches can be affected by differing levels of stress and anxiety as well as different foods, wines, alcohol and smells. Different people are affected in different ways which is why it can be so hard for you to identify what the trigger is.

Headaches caused from the neck are usually as a result of the top three joints not being able to move in the way that they should.  It is important to note that a joint not moving properly will not show up on a scan; it must be assessed by a skilled clinician in order to confirm it as the source of pain.
